In addition to refrigerating and freezing your food, refrigerators these days can do several nifty things. This article has been written to give you an idea of what features to expect from different refrigerator models.

Regular vs Smart Features

While certain features such as ice-makers and special cooling compartments have been relatively common conveniences of fridges for a long time, a new generation of features using cutting edge technologies are on the rise. These 'smart' features make use of sensor technology , the complexity of wireless networks smart phone connectivity along with the sensitivity of camera chips and visual recognition software to provide new levels of user interactivity with refrigerators and food items.

Non-smart features you can find in your refrigerator in 2020

Ice

Many refrigerators provide ice, either through the door or in an in-freezer ice maker. In-freezer ice makers sometimes need to be bought separately so make sure to mark this option in merchant websites or ask in store before buying. Ice production varies so it can be useful to look at customer comments or reviews to decide which refrigerator has the ice making capacity that meets your expectations.

Ice through the door:

While most refrigerators provide ice in some way, ice provided through the door is one of the most sought after features amongst refrigerator models and one many customers don't want to miss out on. As mentioned above, icemakers vary in their ability to offer crushed and cubed ice and also vary widely in the speed with which they manufacture ice cubes from water. These are criteria buyers should consider when contemplating the purchase of an ice-making model.

Wine rack:

Wine racks are an extra feature and a really nice touch. Typically, a wine rack is a stainless steel frame that allows you to store wine bottles below a shelf elegantly. Wine racks have the benefit of saving space on the shelves whilst keeping your wine easily accessible. Practical and perfect for the drinks lover!

Blast Chiller:

This feature can be found in a select group of refrigerators since several years now. Typically you use a chiller by placing a can inside a special compartment in the refrigerator section and pressing a button to have it quickly chilled to a lower temperature. Great if you don't want to put your drink in the freezer ahead of time.

A temperature controlled drawer:

A temperature controlled drawer is perfect for storing meats or other items at a slightly lower temperature than the rest of the refrigerator. It can also be very useful for items that might already be opened and that you want to preserve from spoiling. One of the more practical features on the list in our opinion.

A deli drawer:

This is a drawer for storing meats or certain other items separate from the rest of the refrigerator. It is mostly used for organisation and great for delicate items as well. Some, but not all, deli drawers are temperature controlled.

Split-shelving:

This feature is common but we're pretty sure many people don't know what it is nor how to use it. Split shelving is essentially exactly what it says and having a shelf that splits into two can be a very practical thing. Why? It lets you adjust your interior space to fit your groceries even more efficiently than regular adjustable shelving. Greater flexibility is a welcome feature in refrigerator interiors so we're always very happy to see split shelving in a refrigerator.

Quick Freeze/ Quick cool:

Quick freeze and quick cool are a common feature that makes the freezer or refrigerator automatically shift down a few degrees when you are putting new food into your fridge. This is to make sure your newly introduced produce is quickly put to the correct temperature and that temperatures do not rise significantly by keeping the refrigerator doors open. This is a highly relevant feature and definitely should have a positive effect on overall freshness of your food.

Sabbath mode:

This feature will appeal to Orthodox Jewish groups because it is deemed to make a refrigerator acceptable to use on the Sabbath (the Jewish day of rest).
